Any suggestions for wading boots for backpacking?
(Preview)
I do a lot of backpacking in the eastern sierras in the summertime, and would like to find a pair of lightweight boots or booties. some high country lakes require wading to get your fly past the shelf and its always a drag having to haul in my chest waders and heavy boots when space and weight are limited....

I thought this rod was a couple years older. I found the paperwork while packing boxes in preparation for the move to Michigan. It has been my go to rod from Eagle lake, Pit, Lower Sac, Feather, Yuba, Putah, etc etc. I've never owned a really fast tapered rod and this one is far from it. I just like them s...

Cold weather gloves
(Preview)
Late last year I basically cut the end of my left middle finger off and had it sewn back on. For the most part, it is pretty numb but cold air does wake it up in a not so good way. I suppose this would be a perfect question for steelhead fishermen, what gloves do you prefer?

old post on knots
(Preview)
I do a lot of sniffing around different boards looking at "old" posts for info. Here is a little snippet from 2009 regarding knots. I never really give my line much thought while out on the water but found this very applicable. I can certainly reflect back on breaking off snags or fish and finding my l...

Favorite 5 weight rod for nymphing?
(Preview)
My oldest son finally has a decent job and is looking for a 5 weight for nymphing. He's thinking about a Sage, but frankly, for tossing lead that seems like overkill with a high price. My favorite nymphing rod is a 4 weight St Croix Legend. I've never used/tried some of the newer rods like TFO, Redingt...

If you need another reel or are just curious about this product, these Prestige Plus reels are good and you won't ever find anything better for $20 - or even $50. Fixing issues with Ross FC and FS fly rods.
(Preview)
A few days ago I was notified that Cabelas was selling the Redington Vapen fly rod for 1/2 price. I generally steer away from Redington based on my experience with their CPX line, however, on a trip to Pyramid Lake this year I met a gentleman from SoCal who was using a Vapen 7wt. I liked the non-cork, go...

Dryft Waders
(Preview)
Has anyone tried the Dryft brand waders? The price point is good, and if they are what they claim to be, very durable and cut better for the movement required on rivers like Putah (climbing over downed trees and boulders).

Disc vs. Click and pawl and diameter questions
(Preview)
Anyone have a strong opinion on which is the way to go on a 9' 5wt? I'm debating between the Leland Classic Trout reel (2.9" diameter with click and pawl) vs the Ross CLA (3.25" diameter with disc drag). How important is that extra .35"? As far as drag...I've been told that the click an...

Dyneema as fly reel backing.
(Preview)
This year I decided to try a less expensive and possibly just as good alternative to the usual fly line backings like Dacron and gel-spun lines. Dyneema seems like the perfect alternative. It doesn't stretch, is really tough and thin for the rated breaking strength. For the rated strength Dynee...

Scientific Anglers Frequency lines

Anyone using these new fly lines? At $50 I'm wondering how they perform. My experience has shown that anything under $70 doesn't do what I want it to do well enough ie shoot, mend, roll cast etc.

Orvis Sling Pack sale through 10/12/14
(Preview)
I have the smaller Safe Passage sling pack and really like it. This is a steal at this price. Good through 10/12/14 midnight. The only downside that I have found is that they are not waterproof and so if you don't take care you will get your contents wet.

Advice on reels

Hey guys, Time to upgrade my reel. I'm fishing a 9' Reddington 5wt. Two reels in my price range have caught my eye, but I don't know which (if either) is a good choice. The first is the Ross CLA. The second is the Sage 4200. From what I have been reading, both are good choices (which makes me say get the R...

Anyone else using a ContourRoam camera?
(Preview)
I bought a camera called a ContourRoam and a headstrap for it. The camera does 1080p and 720p at 30fp and also does still shots @5 megapixels. So far so good with the testing.
